Australia's captain Expected to Feature a Major Role in Iconic Rivalry

Pat Cummins bowling

The Australian skipper has taken 309 wickets in 71 appearances with an impressive average.

The Australian chief selector George Bailey has stated that captain Pat Cummins will have a crucial role in the upcoming England-Australia contest.

Speculation had been growing that Cummins might be unavailable due to a stress fracture in his back that was still troubling him.

Previous updates from the Australian camp suggested no official announcement had been made regarding whether he would play, with the Test matches scheduled to begin on 21 November in the WACA.

Bailey expressed that Cummins is "building up" and remained hopeful about his chances of participating.

"We know that the window is narrowing and multiple considerations at play, not only the physical problem, but additional elements," Bailey remarked.

"It's positive. There's strong faith that he's going to play a key capacity. Ideally starting in Perth. Should that not happen, we'll reassess."

Previous Setbacks

The captain missed the white-ball matches against India and New Zealand recently after examinations confirmed a lumbar bone stress.

Previous incidents include of spinal problems, with flare-ups in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 leading to absences from multiple domestic campaigns in a short span.

Cummins stated he would be proactive in his approach in his comeback strategy to secure his spot for the Ashes.

He mentioned that there was no confirmation if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his comeback but acknowledged it was "getting tight" for him to be fit for the opener.

Alternative Arrangements

If he's unavailable, former captain Steve Smith will lead the side.

The talented all-rounder was recently pulled out from the national team for their one-day international series against India as a precautionary measure because of discomfort in his torso.

He labeled it as a "minor" injury and mentioned that Green will play in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "well-prepared to deliver overs."

"We put so much time has gone into creating the schedule for him to participate for the initial game as an dual-role player," the selector detailed.

"His involvement was limited to the first two ODIs anyway. His aggressive style the bat in limited-overs, if it causes any delay for another day, we just made the decision to take a cautious route."
